Psychology Fees
- Each year, the Australian Association of Psychologists Inc (AAPI) publishes a National Schedule of Recommended Fees for psychologists. This serves as a fee guide for clinicians to follow in order to set their fees appropriately. The current AAPI Recommended Fee Schedule from 1st July 2024 to 30th June 2025 is $315 for a standard 46-60 minute consultation. At New Leaf Therapy, we try to offer accessible and reasonable costs for our services. We reserve the right to amend fees at any time.
New Leaf Therapy fees are currently set at $260 for a standard session.
A standard 50 minute session is suitable for those who wish to discuss a singular area in depth to be able to debrief, process and build skills to manage this moving forward. It may be useful for individuals who want ongoing, regular appointments or for those who find longer sessions to be outside their current capacity.
New Leaf Therapy also offers extended sessions for $390. An extended session (80 minutes) is suited to individuals who always feel like they have more to talk about when leaving the therapy room (whether debriefing or info dumping). It may also be useful to individuals who have specific or individual differences that require them to accommodate for their needs in session (e.g. reduced processing speed, attention or memory difficulties). Extended sessions can also be used to develop and practice vital skills (such as crisis aversion and emotion regulation skills).
You can obtain psychological services by utilising a Mental Health Treatment Plan, your NDIS plan or by being a private client. Please note New Leaf Therapy is not a bulk billing practice.
Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP)
A MHTP referral will allow you to access a rebate of $96.65 from Medicare as part of the Better Access initiative. You may be eligible for up to 10* sessions per calendar year. Please note that rebates cannot be provided beyond the amount of sessions allocated by the referring practitioner.
A valid referral must be provided by your General Practitioner (GP) or Psychiatrist. They will typically allocate 6 initial sessions with a psychologist, before reviewing your eligibility for 4 subsequent sessions. It is extremely beneficial for your referrer to be involved in your care (especially your GP as they are your primary physician) so that they are well informed regarding your treatment.
Please note that all psychologists must adhere to mandatory Medicare reporting guidelines, which means we will communicate and write to update your referrer regarding your intervention and treatment progress (after the 6th and 10th session).
A paid invoice will be sent to you after your session has been paid in full. Clients must submit their own claim through their MyGov or Medicare portal, attaching the paid invoice as evidence of the appointment. The rebate will be provided to your nominated bank account as held by Medicare.

*Each individual is able to access 6 initial sessions with a psychologist. Depending on how treatment is progressing, your psychologist may recommend additional sessions to continue working with you to reach your treatment goals. Your referrer can write a subsequent referral requesting 4 additional sessions which will combine up to 10 sessions for each calendar year.
A valid MHTP referral must include the below information:
- The date of referral
- Patient name, date of birth and address
- The referring practitioner's name and Medicare provider number
- Specifying the number of sessions required
- A request for services under the Better Access initiative
- The referring practitioner's physical or electronic signature
Without the above information included in your referral, it is invalid and therefore, it cannot be accepted by our clinic.
Please note that we do not offer Medico-Legal Assessments and Reports or engage in Work Cover claims.
NDIS
New Leaf Therapy is able to support plan-managed and self-managed NDIS Participants. New Leaf Therapy follows the NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits (2024-25) Guide whereby the psychological intervention and assessment rate is currently $222.99 per hour in NSW.
Psychology services can be invoiced as:
- Capacity Building - Assessment, Recommendation, Therapy or Training - Psychology - 15_054_0128_1_3
- Core - Assessment, Recommendation, Therapy or Training Supports - Psychology - 01_701_0128_1_3
Please note we are not an NDIS registered provider, which means we cannot provide support to any NDIS agency-managed participants.
Private
If you are a private fee paying client, this means you will be paying the full consult fee out of pocket with no referral or rebate.
For those with private health insurance (PHI), you may be able to access a partial rebate, however you will need to enquire with your PHI directly to confirm whether you have mental health support included in your extras cover.
Other Service Fees
In some instances, you might require other services which can incur additional fees. This can include (but is not limited to) psychological support letters and reports. Any additional services and fees will be discussed with you prior to administration and completion. Furthermore, the documents will not be released to you (or the relevant party) without New Leaf Therapy receiving full payment for the supports provided.
Out of session correspondence is also subject to further fees. This may include session summaries, detailed emails, phone calls, liaising with other allied health professionals, general practitioners or psychiatrists, family and carer/guardian. However, we will always obtain your consent prior to discussing your care with others.
This is billed at the standard $260 per hour rate for your psychologist's clinical expertise and time taken.
For any letters or reports that are classified as "urgent" (i.e. due date with less than 2 weeks' notice), additional fees may be added to account for the out of hours overtime required to meet your deadline and to make it a priority. Please note that it is not always possible or guaranteed that your psychologist can complete your urgent request, for a range of reasons such as planned annual leave, sickness and ill-health, other client reports and emergencies.
In this case, you would not be charged the additional 'urgent' fee. Please provide your psychologist with as much notice as possible to complete your request, with a minimum of 2 weeks' notice. If you require a support letter or report for school, university or work, you must make this request directly in person during your session or via email. Your psychologist cannot write a letter or report unless you have had an appointment to discuss it. They need to speak to you about the request to ensure it is appropriate and within the psychologists' scope to provide that information, to check they have all the information and details they need, and to confirm exactly what information you consent to be shared with another party.
Please note a letter or report cannot be provided to clients who are not currently engaged in therapy (i.e. discharged clients). Any time taken to write support letters or reports, or time taken to fill in any relevant paperwork, will be charged accordingly. These documents will not be released to the client until New Leaf Therapy receives payment in full.
We have our client's best interests at heart, that means dedicating the necessary time and effort into writing a support letter that is not only accurate and supportive, but also adheres to ethical, legislative and professional standards. For NDIS Participants: Out of session correspondence is also subject to further fees. This can include detailed emails or phone correspondence with general practitioners, psychiatrists, support staff or group home facilities, Support Coordinators (SC), Local Area Coordinators (LAC), guardians/carers and family members. Additional fees are also payable for services such as attending NDIS review meetings with you, stakeholder meetings, teleconference call or video to liaise with other allied health professionals as part of your care team, and other forms of correspondence that are classified as supporting you as the client and/or involving your care and safety. In this case, you will not be charged the additional 'urgent' fee. Clients should provide as much notice as possible to their psychologist for NDIS psychological reports with a minimum of 3-4 weeks' notice required for NDIS reports. New Leaf Therapy charges a minimum of 4 hours for NDIS psychological reports depending on the complexity and purpose of the report.

We understand that life does not always run to schedule, we know that unexpected delays and emergencies can occur! However your time, effort and well-being are important to us.
Our clinic operating hours are 10:00am to 4:00pm. If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, please email admin@newleaftherapy.net.au or text New Leaf Therapy on 0424 695 505 with a minimum of 2 business days' notice to avoid incurring a cancellation or rescheduling fee.
If you provide less than 2 business days' notice, you will incur a fee equating to the cost of the appointment.
